Ohio Malt Barley Committee

In 2017, the Ohio Small Grains Marketing Program voted to form a Malt Barley Committee to assist Ohio farmers interested in growing malt barley. Winter malting barley is new to Ohio and today, the Malt Barley Committee continues to work to assist farmers with important issues facing this emerging crop.

Major Initiatives:

Crop Insurance - This important item continues to be a focus area for the Malt Barley Committee. To date, the committee has met with the Risk Management Agency (RMA) at USDA to work toward granting Contract Malting Barley Coverage for Ohio counties in 2019. Contract Malting Barley coverage allows farmers to protect malt barley to a value that is closer to what will be produced for malt houses. More information can be accessed at USDA here
