New Study Confirms Environmental Benefits of Wheat Production

A March 2025 Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of U.S. wheat production found significant improvements in environmental performance over the past several decades. Conducted through the National Association of Wheat Growers (NAWG), U.S. Wheat Associates (USW), and the National Wheat Foundation (NWF), the research examined how wheat production changed between 1978 and 2018.

The results help put the environmental benefits of wheat production into measurable terms, showing progress in greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption, water use, land use, and soil erosion.

The study was supported by the Ohio Small Grains Marketing Program and led by experts from Texas A&M University AgriLife Research and Colorado State University’s AgNext Institute.

Sustainability Wins for Wheat Farmers

The Life Cycle Assessment found major improvements in the environmental footprint of U.S. wheat production on a per-bushel basis:

  • 33% drop in greenhouse gas emissions: linked to precision fertilizer application and improved input management.
  • 57% reduction in energy consumption: supported by better fuel efficiency and minimal tillage practices.
  • 46% less water usage: driven by higher yields per unit of water and reduced irrigation.
  • 45% decrease in land use: allowing growers to produce more wheat with less land.
  • 60% reduction in soil erosion: supported by conservation-focused practices such as reduced tillage.

These findings show how the wheat farming environmental impact has changed as production efficiency, technology, and conservation practices have improved.

Why Sustainable Wheat Production Matters

The study shows that sustainable wheat production is not only about reducing environmental impact. It is also about producing each bushel more efficiently.

Using less energy, water, and land per bushel while reducing soil erosion can help farmers protect the resources their operations depend on. Continued improvements in technology, conservation, and input management can help growers remain productive while using those resources more efficiently.

That is one reason continued research into wheat production remains important for farmers in Ohio and across the country.

Why Is Wheat Important?

So, why is wheat important to agriculture?

Wheat is a major food and grain crop that supports farmers, food production, domestic markets, and exports. It also gives growers another crop option within diversified farming systems.

For Ohio farmers, wheat is part of a broader small-grains industry supported through research, education, market development, and grower investment.

This makes the importance of wheat both economic and agricultural: stronger production practices can support farm profitability while helping improve how land, water, and other resources are used.

What This Research Means for Ohio Wheat Growers

Although the LCA examined U.S. wheat production nationally, the Ohio Small Grains Marketing Program helped support the research, connecting Ohio growers with industry-wide findings on production efficiency and sustainability.

For growers, the value of the study is straightforward: measurable improvements in resource efficiency show that changes in management, technology, and conservation practices can add up over time.
