Work at Ohio Corn & Wheat

Communications Specialist

Do you love using words, photos, graphics, and video to tell a compelling story through creative content? Are you often seen with a camera in hand? Do you appreciate witty tweets between national brands?

Ohio Corn & Wheat is searching for a Communications Specialist to join our small but mighty team serving Ohio’s corn and small grains community. This position will report to the Director of Marketing and Communications.

About Ohio Corn & Wheat

Ohio Corn & Wheat is a strategic alliance that houses three separate and unique organizations: the Ohio Corn Checkoff, the Ohio Small Grains Checkoff and the Ohio Corn & Wheat Growers Association. We work on behalf of Ohio’s corn and small grain farmers to secure a sustainable future.

Who we’re looking for

  • Someone who is a passionate storyteller invested in advancing the agriculture industry
  • Someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment with multiple competing priorities
  • Someone who gets excited about capturing content on-site and behind-the-scenes
  • Someone who is known among their friends as the grammar go-to
  • Someone who is a stickler for digital file organization and systems
  • Someone who isn’t afraid to ask, “What if we…?” in a collaborative team environment
  • Someone with a high level of curiosity, imagination, and creativity
  • Someone who is willing to pitch in on a collaborative team to get the work done
  • Someone who can execute smart communications, with the help of outside direction and their own independent judgment

What you’ll do

  • Create written, visual, and social content for multiple channels that is engaging and authentic to the Ohio Corn & Wheat brand
    • You’ll write blogs, Instagram and Facebook posts, and tweets—and create short videos for our Instagram, website and YouTube channel
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Marketing and Communications to ensure content is aligned with brand identity and strategic plan
    • You’ll learn the organization’s voice and help map out content that achieves strategic goals and channels member voices, not just post the funniest content of the day
    • You’ll partner with the organization’s communications and marketing partner agency, as well as national and state organizations
  • Capture photo and video content on-site at events and at planned shoots
    • You’ll always be seen with a camera in hand at the organization’s events on farms, at the Statehouse, and in Washington, D.C.
  • Design graphics and visuals
    • You’ll design social media graphics, flyers, and more as required by projects
  • Manage multiple social media accounts and foster online community engagement
    • You’ll lead the execution of social posts and respond to comments and messages
  • Manage Ohio Corn & Wheat’s creative asset archive
    • You’ll be a fanatic about organizing and archiving raw and edited files
  • Contribute to printed materials and publications
    • You’ll write articles for CropsTalk (OCW’s bi-monthly insert in Ohio’s Country Journal) and develop copy as needed for brochures, displays, and other projects

The experience and skills you’ll bring

  • Two or more years in a marketing or communications role
  • A bachelor’s degree, preferably in marketing, communication, agricultural communication or public relations
  • Background and/or experience with Midwest grain production and how to connect with corn and wheat growers
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills, resulting in the ability to function independently
  • Excellence in capturing content and images at events and on planned shoots
  • Comfort filming on both DSLR and iPhone
  • Design fluency coupled with excellent visual design sensibilities, including use of Canva
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud apps – InDesign, Light Room, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Premiere
  • Demonstrated understanding of social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, etc.) and how each platform can be utilized
  • Bonus: Experience executing email marketing campaigns using Constant Contact or similar tools and/or using social media tools such as Sprout Social
  • Note: If you are interested in the position but don’t have all of the skills and experience detailed above, let us know of your interest. We are open to learning more about what you could bring to this opportunity.

Role execution and compensation

  • This position is a full-time, salaried position requiring 40+ hours a week. These hours will vary according to events, travel, and responsibilities to the association and checkoff boards. Occasional weekends and frequent travel are required.
